According to a 29 October report by Bulgarian National Television (BNT), some of the cargo presents a potential navigational hazard while the relevant services monitor its movement.

Water samples from five Black Sea locations

The Black Sea Basin Directorate is monitoring conditions and collecting samples near Durankulak, Shabla, Cape Kaliakra, Byala and Sozopol. According to the directorate's head, Yavor Dimitrov, visual inspections and samples taken so far have not detected petroleum products in the water. This does not mean monitoring has ended or that future risks can be ruled out.

The Environment Ministry said no visible oil slicks were found during the initial inspection near Shabla and Bolata Bay. Information about the sunken vessel's cargo includes household chemicals, plastics and lithium-ion batteries. The condition of individual containers matters when assessing possible consequences.

Navigation hazard and investigation

Floating containers can endanger passing vessels even without immediate pollution. Maritime specialists have highlighted the need for monitoring so that objects posing a danger to navigation can be identified promptly.

The Military District Prosecutor's Office in Sofia has opened a pre-trial investigation into the attack on the container ship, BNT reports. Monitoring of the marine environment continues. At the time of publication, there is no confirmed report of significant pollution resulting from this incident, and the results of further sampling remain important.

Source: BNT, 29 October 2026; BNT / Ministry of Environment and Water, 28 October 2026

Снимка: Pim de Boer / Unsplash (илюстративна)

Floating containers after the sinking of CONTSHIP JET pose a navigation risk.
