AI model uses symmetry to track fetal head movement during MRI

MIT presents E(3)-Pose, a research method for estimating fetal head orientation during MRI. It is not a ready replacement for medical diagnosis.

Researchers at MIT, Boston Children's Hospital and Inria are developing an AI method to account for fetal head movement during magnetic resonance imaging. MIT presented the E(3)-Pose project on 19 October.

The model uses the head's left-right symmetry to estimate its position and support the selection of MRI slices. The aim is more reliable imaging despite movement.

This is research, not a ready replacement for medical diagnosis. Training mainly uses third-trimester data. Earlier pregnancy remains a future research task. The paper was presented at ECCV 2026, and its first preprint appeared in December 2025. The MIT news report is new, not the date of the study itself.
