The internationally recognised Bulgarian chess player Nurgyul Salimova has been announced as a special guest at the opening of the youth chess tournament Zonta Cup in Veliko Tarnovo. The event is scheduled to begin on 31 October 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at the Momina Krepost complex in the Ksilifor area.
The event is organised by Zonta Club Veliko Tarnovo and Etar Chess Club, according to local newspaper Yantra DNES on 21 October. Salimova is listed as a guest on the opening day; the announcement does not say she will compete.
Competition for young chess players
The tournament is aimed at children and young players in the under-8, under-10, under-12 and under-14 age groups. It offers participants an opportunity to compete and gain experience, with different age brackets included in the programme.
Veliko Tarnovo has an active chess community, and events of this kind let children meet established Bulgarian players. Results and standings can only be reported after the tournament takes place.
For possible changes to the schedule, participation requirements or visitor access, consult the organisers.
