China's yuan reached a new four-year high against the US dollar during Asian trading on October 26. According to Reuters, it briefly traded at 6.6682 yuan per dollar, its strongest level since June 2022. This figure reflects a snapshot of the morning session, not the day's closing exchange rate.
The People's Bank of China set its official daily reference rate at 6.7162 yuan per dollar. This was weaker than market expectations, indicating that the authorities aim to moderate the pace of appreciation. Onshore trading is permitted within a 2% band around the daily fixing.
A weaker dollar, lower oil prices and falling yields on US government bonds supported China's currency. Investors are watching the decisions of the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan this week. Appreciation may affect exporters and import prices, but the currency's future direction remains uncertain.
