Updated on 20 October 2026, 15:09. The Municipal Election Commission in Gorna Oryahovitsa announced a meeting for 21 October at 14:00. It will take place at 5 Georgi Izmirliev Square, room 114. The time is confirmed in the commission's official announcement of 20 October; scheduling a meeting is not in itself a decision to terminate the mayor's powers.
Gorna Oryahovitsa mayor Nikolay Rashkov submitted his resignation on 20 October, the municipality said. He handed his application to Ivan Iliev, chair of the Municipal Election Commission.
Submitting a resignation and formally terminating a mayor's powers are separate steps. According to the announcement, the Municipal Election Commission is due to rule, followed by Municipal Council action on the administration for the remainder of the term. At the time of checking for this article, no new decision on today's resignation was found on the commission's decisions page.
The earlier proceedings
Municipal Election Commission Decision No. 229 of 31 July 2026 describes a final court ruling on a conflict of interest. In the vote at that time to terminate the mayor's powers, the commission did not reach the required majority: five members voted in favour and five against. A decision rejecting the proposal was issued. These were the earlier proceedings, not a decision on the resignation of 20 October.
