The team of Professor Hitko Vachev and Iliyan Petrakiev has located the necropolis of a medieval monastery associated with St Theodosius of Tarnovo near Samovodene. RegNews reported the findings on October 19, citing the archaeologists from the Regional History Museum in Veliko Tarnovo.
The site lies below today's Holy Trinity Monastery. Research so far has covered the main Church of St Nicholas, while the necropolis opens another direction for investigating the complex.
According to the report, the excavated church is protected by a roof structure provided through a donation from Bulgaria's Electricity System Operator. This helps preserve the remains as work at the site continues.
The archaeologists discuss the possibility that the grave of St Roman of Tarnovo may lie in the necropolis or in the church's narthex. This is a hypothesis for future investigation, not an announcement that a grave has been discovered or identified.
