The world is on course for an increase of around 2.8°C in the average global temperature by the end of the century if current policies remain unchanged. That is the finding of a new report by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), released on 21 October, according to Reuters.

Even if countries fully deliver on their stated climate pledges, warming is projected to reach approximately 2.6°C by 2100 relative to pre-industrial levels. Both estimates are higher than those in the previous report.

UNEP says that under the most favourable scenario it examined, global greenhouse gas emissions must fall by 18% by 2030, 45% by 2035 and 69% by 2040 compared with 2025 levels. Current national plans envisage much smaller reductions.

The report notes that renewable energy growth and climate policies are already making a difference, but the pace of action remains insufficient. The findings come ahead of the COP31 international climate talks in Türkiye.
