ERP Sever announced on 2 November that the expansion of the Maksuda electricity substation in Varna has been completed. According to the company, the investment exceeds €1.5 million, while a new 50 MVA power transformer increases the total installed transformer capacity from 75 to 125 MVA.
What the expansion includes
Alongside the transformer, the project includes a new 110 kV bay, a connection to the enclosed 20 kV switchgear, and a new packaged distribution switchgear unit at the same voltage. According to the company, the facilities were officially brought into operation on 29 October 2026
Following the upgrade, the substation has three power transformers with a combined capacity of 125 MVA. This is an increase of approximately 67% from the previous 75 MVA. The company says the additional capacity will help manage loads and connect new customers.
Which parts of Varna are expected to benefit
The expected benefits are concentrated mainly in the Western Industrial Zone and the neighbourhoods of Vladislavovo and Kaisieva Gradina. The aim is to provide more reliable electricity supplies as demand grows and create more opportunities for local businesses.
ERP Sever also says the upgrade improves the conditions for meeting the N-1 reliability criterion — a principle under which the power system should continue operating even when one component fails. This does not mean that all possible electricity outages have been eliminated.
The stated benefits and technical specifications come from the electricity distribution company. Its press release does not include independent measurements of changes in the frequency or duration of outages following the upgrade.
