Spain will hold a snap general election on 29 November 2026, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced in a televised address on 5 October.
The announcement follows the defeat of emergency housing measures in parliament. The rejected decrees included proposals aimed at reducing evictions and property speculation, according to ITV News.
Housing affordability has become a prominent public issue, with demonstrations calling for government action. The parliamentary setback brought forward an election that had been expected in 2027.
Sánchez has governed in coalition with the left-wing Sumar alliance since 2023, relying on smaller parties for parliamentary support. His announcement opens a new national election campaign but does not establish who will form the next government.
