Flow from Svishtov mineral-water borehole declines; specialist investigation launched
Svishtov Municipality has commissioned a hydrogeological survey and downhole video inspection of borehole R-1hg after cleaning failed to restore a stable flow of mineral water.

Svishtov Municipality has launched a specialist hydrogeological survey of mineral-water borehole R-1hg in the western part of the city. The reason is the continuing decline in water flow despite earlier technical work, the municipal press office said on 27 October 2026.
According to the municipality, unauthorised interference with the water intake several weeks ago interrupted the natural flow of mineral water. The borehole was then cleaned using the airlift method to a depth of more than 50 metres. Initially, the water reached a temperature of 46°C, but subsequent monitoring showed that the flow rate was declining again.
Because a lasting recovery has not been achieved, the local authority has engaged a hydrogeologist. Part of the investigation is downhole video inspection — lowering a video camera into the borehole to assess its condition at depth. The inspection aims to determine why water flow has decreased.
The municipality has not yet announced a definitive diagnosis of the fault or a timetable for restoring normal flow. The next technical measures will be determined after the expert assessment and video inspection. It would therefore be premature to claim that the problem has been resolved.
Mineral water is a locally important public resource. The findings of the investigation will help determine how and when the facility can be stabilised.
