On 31 October 2026, the United Nations marks World Cities Day. This year's theme is 'Regenerating the City: Adequate Housing for All' (Regenerating the City: Adequate Housing for All). The international observance is taking place in Fuzhou, China, focusing on adequate housing, upgrading existing neighbourhoods and involving local communities.
More than three billion people lack adequate housing
In his message for the day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said more than three billion people worldwide lack adequate housing, while 1.1 billion live in informal settlements. Ageing infrastructure, rising costs and climate-related risks are placing further pressure on cities.
What does urban regeneration mean?
The UN sees upgrading existing neighbourhoods as a way to improve housing, public transport, access to services and public spaces. It stresses that residents should be involved in planning so improvements do not force people out of their own neighbourhoods.
These issues matter to Bulgarian municipalities too: road repairs, accessibility of public buildings, energy efficiency and the condition of housing stock all depend on local decisions that affect quality of life. The UN observance does not imply that Veliko Tarnovo is an official host or participant in the Fuzhou event.
World Cities Day concludes Urban October
The 31 October observance concludes the international initiative Urban October, which began with World Habitat Day earlier in the month. World Cities Day has been marked annually since 2014 under a United Nations initiative.
