Canadian author Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy announced its decision on 8 October, Reuters and Associated Press report.

The academy recognises her inventive body of work and the way its engagement with classical traditions creates new forms in contemporary literature.

Carson is a poet, essayist and translator whose writing frequently crosses the boundaries between verse, prose and the study of ancient texts. Her well-known books include the verse novel Autobiography of Red.

Born in Toronto in 1950, she has taught classics in North America. Her translations from ancient Greek are a substantial part of her literary work.
