On 1 November 2026, Bulgaria's traffic police launched their nationwide Operation Winter road-safety campaign. Until 30 November, officers will check how different road users follow safety rules and whether vehicles are ready for winter conditions. The campaign also covers roads in Veliko Tarnovo Province.

Three stages during November

From 1 to 10 November the main focus is on cyclists, electric scooter riders and animal-drawn vehicles. Between 11 and 20 November the focus shifts to pedestrians, behaviour at pedestrian crossings and interactions among road users.

In the final stage — 21–30 November — checks will concentrate on vehicle roadworthiness, lighting and readiness for driving in winter conditions.

Tyre requirements take effect on 15 November

From 15 November 2026 to 1 March 2027 cars must use tyres designed for winter conditions or tyres with a tread depth of at least 4 millimetres, the traffic police remind drivers. Tyres need not be marketed specifically as winter tyres if they meet the legal tread-depth requirement.

Before setting off, drivers should check their headlights, wipers, windscreen washer fluid, required safety equipment and current road conditions along the route. On wet roads, speed should be adjusted to the conditions.
